As Government lockdown restrictions are being eased further on Monday 17 May and more customers return to buses, we wanted to let you know the quieter times to travel and what we are doing to continue providing a safe, clean and reliable service. We also wanted to highlight an important change in the capacity of buses.
The network wide quieter times are:
Between 08:15 and 16:00 and after 17:30 on weekdays
Before noon and after 18:00 on weekends
Our TfL Go app can help you plan your journey and shows the quieter times to travel along with live service information.
Continue to walk or cycle part of your journey where possible. Legible London signs across the city provide you with local information, potential routes for those walking and cycling, including Santander Cycles and nearby docking stations.
Please wash or sanitise hands before and after travel. More than 1,000 hand sanitisers are installed across the network, and 200 UV light devices are continually sanitising escalator handrails.
You must wear a face covering over your nose and mouth at all times when on the transport network, unless exempt. The overwhelming majority of people are complying with this requirement, and the British Transport Police, the Metropolitan Police and our own officers are on the network to check compliance. Fines of up to £6,400 exist for anyone who does not comply. To date around 172,000 customers have been stopped from travelling and around 3,300 fixed penalty notices have been issued.
Our enhanced cleaning regime continues to make the network cleaner than ever. Buses are cleaned every day with hospital-grade cleaning substances that kill viruses and bacteria on contact and provide ongoing protection.
Our air ventilation system means that air continuously flows through all our buses. Buses are fitted with air extraction and ventilation systems and we have made modifications to keep windows open throughout the passenger area. This, along with the frequent opening of doors, ensures a flow of fresh air. You can find out more about what we are doing to keep our services clean.
We are running a full and comprehensive bus network of around 8,000 buses every day. In line with bus services across the country, the capacity of buses will be doubled on 17 May. From Monday, most seats on buses can be used, with the capacity of double-decker buses increasing to around 60. This will enable more people to travel on the bus network as Government restrictions continue to ease. Rear-facing seats in bays will be blocked off to continue to reduce the risk of transmission.
Our staff are on hand to help and welcome you back on the bus network, so please ask for their advice if you are unsure about anything. There is extensive signage in place on buses to help enable social distancing.
